Machine #38
Deck of Playing Cards

July 2019 // First deck of cards I'd ever done. It's been a silent goal of mine to design a full deck. As I asked myself what deck ONLY I could create, I landed on my machine sketches...scroll down to see more... I expanded out the style to what you see here.
One of the things this deck taught me: you can only stylize things so much. I had a lot of fun with the font for this, but it was a bit hard to actually play with this deck because many games rely heavily on the corner numbers. I love the aesthetic, but I was hoping that it would be more useable.

typography play

December 2018 // Loosely based off of Mark Hatch's Maker Manifesto, I did this small series to experiment with dramatic black & white layouts and some new typefaces. In case the rest of my website doesn't give it away, I fully support anything related to making, STEM education, tinkering, and exploration. This series was, in a small way, in reaction to and making the Maker Manifesto my own. These now hang on my studio wall for ongoing inspiration.

Machine #34: Argyle Gumball Machine

machine sketches

A small selection of machine sketches completed between 2014 and 2019. Done for my graphical amusement. Original artwork is drawn in pencil and then digitized in Illustrator.  As I have developed my skills in new technologies & techniques, I have continued to explore this artwork collection in other mediums. See a wooden machine with my laser cut version on Machine #14  [July 2017]  and an animated version of Machine #24 [Feb. 2018] using Adobe After Effects.
Machine #34 // Argyle Gumball Machine  (above)
Each one of my machines is inspired by a particular kind of mechanism or visual element. When the words "argyle" and "gumball machine" crossed my mind, it was too amusing not to give it a sketch.  This was also the 2nd machine that I drew in the larger format, allowing more complex and interconnected whimsy.
